The Ministry of Health has recently promulgated a revised edition of Hygienic Criteria of Food Additive Application, permitting the use of 22 categories of food additives, including 290 kinds of additives, 1,528 kinds of fragrances and flavors, 149 kinds of processing agents and 55 kinds of chewing gum bases beginning on June 1, 2008. Colorants like cochineal are permitted to be used in ready-to-eat meat, snack noodles and fruit jelly.
