In the first eight months of 2007, the average price of logs imported from Russia increased rapidly at the rate of 16.7%, the import volume and value was 78.318 million cubic meters and 780 million USD, up 18.6% and 38.4% from same period last year. The importation price of different varieties of logs showed rising momentum. Among them, the average price of camphor pine which amounted three fourths of the total import volume went up 17.1%; other varieties of logs also saw an increase of over 12%.

It?s learned that the price of Russian logs sharply rose for lots of reasons; including high demand in international market, increase of taxes and fees, oil price hike, price hike of labor force due to appreciation of Ruble and so on.

Russia is the biggest log importation country for China. In 2006, China imported 21.82 million cubic meters of logs from Russia, amounting to 70% of total import volume; in 2000-2006, this proportion stayed at over 53.22%. With the increase of log export duty in Russia, wood processing enterprises and furniture industry will certainly be affected. It?s analyzed that although price of Russian logs has gone up, the sustainable trade development trend between China and Russia will not be changed for China carries out restriction policy for cutting.
