With the decline of hog price, the returns from hog production dropped from a profit of RMB541/head in April to a loss of RMB200/head in Oct. Hog farms that produce piglets themselves suffer less losses because of low piglet cost.

Broiler production generated a profit of RMB0.78/bird in Oct. but moderate negative returns in Nov.

Egg production generated a small profit margin in Aug. and Sep. but a loss of RMB0.65/kg in Oct. After the melamine egg incident, farmers suffered a loss of RMB0.8/kg from egg sales.
