In light of the detection of melamine in eggs exported to Hong Kong by Jingshan Pengcheng Co., Ltd. and Jinzhou Shuanggang Co., Ltd., Hubei Agricultural Bureau has ordered the two companies to recall eggs for disposal. In addition, Hubei kicked off strict quality inspection in all large egg farms and egg layer feed mills.
It was found that the eggs exported to Hong Kong were purchased from farmers, not directly produced by the two companies. BOABC considers that there are some problems in agricultural industrialization and brand farm product supervision.
To boost agricultural industrialization, the government gives a favorable policy to leading companies, such as low-interest bank loans, exemption of income tax, government’s complementing facilities, etc. But leading companies hardly share the benefit with contracted farmers.
Some leading companies purchase ordinary eggs from farmers and sell them in the name of high-quality brand products to seek a high profit. But there are no regulations governing this presently.
Small egg farms and farming households lack the capability and means to test feed quality. Of the large numbers of feed mills, few follow requirements and criteria and the government’s supervision is week.
