>>BOABC Insights

Guangdong Agriculture Bureau has recently tested the quality of 531 batches of feed and found melamine in 8 batches, including poultry feed, cow feed, hog feed and fish feed.

Melamine found in Dalian eggs was proved to come from corn ethanol dregs used as a protein ingredient in feed production. Home-made bone meal, fish meal and other protein feed ingredients often contain illegal additives. Because of the large number of such producers, it is difficult to supervise their production.

The government has recently started to reevaluate feed producers’ qualifications. The number of feed enterprises has decreased from 20,000 ones in 2006 to 10,000 ones in 2008 and is expected to keep decreasing. This makes it easier for the government to step up supervision of feed producers and urge feed producers to pay attention to feed ingredient quality.
