>>BOABC Insights

Continuous downpour has caused floods in eastern and southern provinces recently, resulting in heavy damages to livestock production.

Normally, Zhejiang and Guangdong ship in 1 ~ 2 million heads of hogs each month respectively and Henan, Hebei, Shandong and Hunan ship out 2 million heads each month respectively. Floods blocked shipment of hogs, broilers and eggs from Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Hunan to Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, etc. Consequently, livestock product price dropped in the producing regions but ran high in the consuming regions.

It is estimated that more than 10 million heads of hogs and 100 million birds of poultry may die of floods this summer, accounting for 3% and 2% of the nation’s inventory respectively. If 50 million egg layers die of floods, the nation’s egg layer inventory would shrink by 4%, which may affect egg supply in some regions.
