>>BOABC Insights

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 12.34 million heads of livestock died in Sichuan during the earthquake. BOABC holds that the loss would not affect the nation’s livestock supply.

Sichuan’s hog inventory recorded 48.22 million heads at the end of 2007, accounting for 12.27% of the nation’s total. The death of 810,000 heads of hogs during the earthquake accounts for just 0.15% of the current provincial inventory of 53 million heads.

Poultry inventory is about 500 million birds in the province currently, 4.79% of the nation’s total. The death of 10 million birds accounts for 2% of the total poultry inventory in the province.

Sichuan’s feed production recorded 5.85 million MT in 2007, accounting for 4.99% of the nation’s total. Its corn and soymeal consumption recorded 5.99 million MT and 1.54 million MT in 2007, accounting for 6.81% and 6.79% of the nation’s total. Some feed mills suffered damages during the earthquake, but this does not affect feed supply since the nation’s total feed productive capacity is in the surplus.
