According to the State Statistics Bureau, China’s rice production by medium and large enterprises recorded 5.864 million MT in June, 13.5% more than the month before and 31.01% more than the same period of last year. Rice production by these producers totaled 28.648 million MT in Jan. ~ June, an increase of 38.1% on the year-on-year basis. These producers consumed about 8.624 million MT paddy in June and 42.129 million MT in Jan. ~ June.

The nation’s rice production by all kinds of mills totaled 12.056 million MT in June, equal to a paddy consumption of 17.729 million MT. Taking into account of paddy consumption for various uses, the nation consumed about 19.4 million MT paddy in June. Paddy inventory was 60.68million MT at the end of June (early rice production in Guangdong and Hainan not taken into account), resulting in a consumption index of 3.2.

Paddy consumption for various uses was estimated to be 196.21 million MT in the first eleven months of 2008/2009 (July~ June). Paddy inventory is predicted to be 60.68 million MT at the end of 2008/2009, suggesting a safety index of 30.89%.

Paddy consumption for food use, industrial use and feed use is predicted to go up in 2009/2010, but paddy production is predicted to lag behind.
