According to the customs, China’s wheat imports and exports stayed at a bottom low level in Sept.
Flour imports registered 795 MT in Sept., 20.39% less than the month before and 41.13% less on the year-on-year basis. The bulk of the imports came from Australia, Japan, South Korea, USA and Canada. Flour import price was $730/MT (CIF) in Sept., up 6.28% over the month before and up 43.55% on the year-on-year basis, attributable to higher quality of the flour. Flour import price is predicted to drop in the months to follow. During Jan. ~ Sept., flour imports totaled 8,327.7 MT, a slip of 35.52% on the year-on-year basis. Flour imports are estimated to be 11,500 MT in 2008. Imported flour is mainly consumed by foreign-invested food companies.
Flour exports were 13,458 MT in Sept., parallel to the month before, but down 79.5% on the year-on-year basis. Flour export price was $456/MT (FOB) in Sept., down 2.11% from the month before but up 61.53% on the year-on-year basis. Flour export price is predicted to go steady.
During Jan. ~ Sept., flour exports totaled 146,402 MT, a collapse of 63.77% on the year-on-year basis. The bulk of the flour exports went to Hong Kong and Macao. Despite the brisk season of flour consumption in the second half of a year, traders in Hong Kong and Macao slowed down imports of flour from other provinces on expectation of a further price decline.
