>>BOABC Insights

Though earthquake caused heavy damage to livestock production in Sichuan, corn consumption for feed use is little affected in the nation on the whole.

About 810,000 heads of hogs and 10 million birds of poultry died during the earthquake, just 0.1% and 2% of the provincial total inventory respectively.

Sichuan’s feed production was 5.85 million MT in 2007, about 4.99% of the nation’s total. Its corn consumption was 5.99 million MT in 2007, 6.81% of the nation’s total. The earthquake damaged some feed mills, affecting local feed production. As the nation’s total feed productive capacity is in the surplus, the loss in Sichuan’s feed production can be compensated by feed production in other regions.
