Native salt with low iodine content in Tibet is harmful to health. The government made great efforts to increase iodized salt sales with more and more subsidy in the past decade. From 1999 to 2008, iodized salt market share grew from 24% to 66%, reducing simple goiter ratio in children of 8 to 10 years old from 29% to 4.8%.

From 2009 on, the government is to provide RMB30 million subsidy each year in Tibet to reduce iodized salt price from RMB1.5/kg to RMB0.5/kg.
