According to a survey made by the Chinese Cotton Association in 2,118 farming households in twelve provinces during late May and early June, China’s planted cotton acreage is 5.2133 million ha. this year, a decrease of 11.34% from last year. Specifically, cotton acreage dropped 24.8% in the Yangtse River reaches, 10.1% in the Yellow River reaches and 1.8% in the Northwest.
Cotton crop is in better condition in the Yangtse River reaches and Yellow River reaches this year over last year thanks to mild pest attack and diseases. Cotton plant density increases in the Yangtse River reaches and cotton interplanting with wheat and melons increases in the Yellow River reaches. Xinjiang’s yield is estimated to go up 5.8 ~ 9.4% this year over last year.
Based on data from various sources and BOABC’s databank, BOABC estimates that China’s planted cotton acreage and production may be 5.519 million ha. and 7.508 million MT this year, 7.46% and 3.47% less than last year respectively. The nation’s cotton yield is estimated to be 1,360 kg/ha. Cotton yield is anticipated to go up in most parts of the nation, except in Henan, Anhui and Hubei where summer-planted cotton acreage increases.
Xinjiang’s planted cotton acreage is estimated to drop 1.96% this year from last year to a level of 1.65 million ha. Its cotton production and yield are estimated to be 3.4 million MT and 2,060 kg/ha.
