China’s harvested cotton acreage and production were estimated to be 5.897 million ha. and 7.778 million MT in 2008.
BOABC predicts that planted cotton acreage and production may drop 9.4% and 8.3% respectively in 2009, falling to a level of 5.404 million ha. and 7.136 million MT respectively.
Under the government’s intervention, Xinjiang’s cotton acreage is estimated to drop to 1.553 million ha. this year, down 7.7% or 130,000 ha. from last year. Its production is predicted to be 2.85 million MT this year.
In the Yellow River reaches, planted cotton acreage is expected to drop 12% in Shanxi, 18% in Shaanxi, 8% in Henan, 8% in Shandong and 8% in Hebei this year from last year.
In the Yangtse River reaches, planted cotton acreage is predicted to decrease 12% in Anhui, 15% in Jiangsu and 15% in Jiangxi this year.
