China’s yarn production by medium and large mills registered 1.86 million MT in Dec., down 1.28% from the month before and down 1.7% on the year-on-year basis. Yarn production by theses mills totaled 21.49 million MT in 2008, an increase of 8.35% on the year-on-year basis. In the first five months of 2008/2009 (beginning in Aug.), yarn production by such mills totaled 9.354 million MT, 5.52% more on the year-on-year basis.
By BOABC’s pattern of calculation, yarn mills consumed about 1.005 million MT cotton in Dec. and 11.61 million MT in 2008. The nation’s total cotton consumption (including consumption for other purposes) was about 11.89 million MT in 2008.
In the first five months of 2008/2009, it is estimated that 5.054 million MT cotton was consumed for yarn production in the medium and large mills and 5.143 million MT consumed in the nation for various uses. It is predicted that 10.23 million MT cotton may be consumed for yarn production and 10.4 million MT in the nation for all kinds of uses in 2008/2009.
If we calculate cotton consumption by yarn production of different kinds, we may see larger cotton consumption in 2008. According to the State Statistics Bureau, pure cotton yarn production was 1.501 million MT in Dec. and 17.378 million MT in 2008 and mixed yard production was 225,000 MT in Dec. and 2.53 million MT in 2008. Calculated at a cotton ratio of 84.89% in mixed yarn in Dec. and 84.98% in 2008, cotton consumption was about 1.5798 million MT in Dec. and 18.2635 million MT in 2008. Taking into account of 6% waste and 15% reclaimed cotton, cotton consumption was about 1.423 million MT in Dec. and 16.455 million MT in 2008.
