BOABC’s statistics show that China’s harvested cotton acreage is 5.9906 million ha. and cotton production is 7.84 million MT this year, down 0.39% and 2.23% respectively from last year.
In the Northwest, Xinjiang’s cotton acreage is about 1.683 million ha., down 5.59% from last year, attributable to the government’s restructuring of farm product-mix. Its cotton production is estimated to drop 2.81% from last year. Shanxi’s cotton production dropped to 93,000 MT and Shaanxi’s to 89,000 MT this year, down 28.5% and 17.6% respectively from last year, attributable to cotton acreage reduction and drought.
In the Yangtse River reaches, cotton yield was affected by prolonged rains. Cotton production dropped 5.28% in Hubei, 4.25% in Anhui and 3.49% in Jiangsu to a level of 429,000 MT, 406,000 MT and 340,000 MT respectively.
In the lower reaches of the Yellow River, cotton production added 4.62% in Hebei, 4% in Henan and 1.42% in Shandong, reaching a level of 680,000 MT, 790,000 MT and 1.07 million MT respectively.
