BOABC estimates that China’s planted cotton acreage and production may be 5.897 million ha. and 7.793 million MT in 2008, down 1.17% and 2.81% respectively from last year. Production is estimated to drop 8.71% in Xinjiang, 4.06% in Anhui and 7.33% in Jiangsu to a respective level of 3.004 million MT, 407,000 MT and 326,000 MT. Cotton production is estimated to drop more than 10% in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu.
Cotton yield stayed at a high level in Xinjiang but dropped in other provinces. In eastern part of the country, excessive rains affected cotton growth and high price affected fertilizer and pesticide consumption. In Shanxi and Shaanxi, drought affected yield.
Cotton stock/consumption ratio is estimated to be 16.7% in 2008/2009.
