According to the State Statistics Bureau, yarn production by scale textile mills registered 1.8955 million MT in May, 4.44% more than the month before and 15.91% more than the same period of last year. The rapid increase was accredited to the government’s control of cotton price, which cut yarn production cost.

The nation’s yarn production totaled 8.2842 million MT in Jan. ~ May and 17.1484 million MT in 2007/2008 (beginning in Aug.), exceeding the same period of last year by 11.4% and 11.43% respectively.

By BOABC’s calculation pattern, cotton consumption for yarn production was 1.0946 million MT in May, 4.799 million MT in Jan. ~ May and 10.068 million MT in the 2007/2008 crop year.

The nation’s cotton supply was 11.462 million MT by April, including 1.986 million MT carryin from last year and 9.476 million MT production and imports in 2007/2008.

Excluding cotton imports in May and reclamation of waste and old cotton, the nation’s cotton stock was 1.394 million MT by the end of May, including 1 million MT in Xinjiang and less than 400,000 MT in other provinces. It is clear that cotton supply is strained in eastern and southern provinces.
